Theology is human articulation about who God is, what God has done, how God functions, when God take actions, and where is God now, based on God’s revealed living Word, Jesus Christ, written word, the Bible, and breathed word, the Holy Spirit. Professor Leanne Van Dyke puts it simply, “Theology is human speech about God.”
While God’s Word never changed, human speech does because we are influenced by our culture and context. Our speech about God is always limited by our environment. Years ago, when I was about to leave Burma for America, I called my aunt in San Jose and asked her what to bring and what to expect. She told me not to bring anything and not to expect anything, but just come. I had a lot of imagination about America, based on the revelation from the relatives and friends who had been there, and based on the America I had seen in the movies and TV programs. To my total surprise, only when I actually landed on this land, I discovered that America was totally different from what I have imagined. Then I realized that my imagination of USAmerica was limited by my third world context.
